A coin counting machine discriminates between different coin denominations based on their size.
Discrimination on its own is not a bad thing. If you think it is, you are probably thinking of the term “discriminate against”, which is indeed a bad thing. Often, just the term “Discrimination” is used to mean discrimination against, but it is different from discrimination between. When I discriminate between people based on their color, I simply just categorize them into races. When discriminate against people based on their color, I mistreat them based on the notion that one race is superior to another. Discrimination between things is necessary in our day-to-day lives. Discrimination against things is a sickness in our society that we have yet to devise a cure for.
