-\\ +The first step of conflict resolution begins before a conflict even happens, by identifying potential //damage//. Conflicts can arise when a person does something the other does not like, so they typically first express themselves through a dislike of a thing, even if very subtly. Something may slightly chafe or even annoy you, you may experience changes in your social environment or the way you are treated, something someone does may affect you negatively financially or academically. Maybe someone is being a doofus and is about to mess up something you care about. Regardless of what it is, the first thing you're going to notice is some kind of //damage//, potential or perceived.
-\\+

+Before anything else happens, it must be determined what exactly the cause of the (potential) damage is. Most potential damage (or even most perceived damage) is circumstantial and does not warrant any sort of conflict. In such a situation, opening a conflict with the people involved is counterproductive and should be avoided in favor of better stress/emotion/anger management techniques.

+However, even in these cases (which make up the largest share of all cases) it can often be useful to let others know that you are in distress and working out where it comes from, even if it is most likely not their fault. This is done through the //S1-Notice//.
